Making the impossible possible: celebrating women’s contribution to the IT industry

On the occasion of Women’s Day, we would like to honor every woman who has contributed to the IT industry.

Every year on the 8th of March, we celebrate International Women’s Day to pay tribute to the strength and essence of femininity. But considering the societal expectation that is often placed on women, a question that concerns us is: “Why is this celebration limited to one day?” 

Today, “woman” is no longer a damsel in distress; rather, she has evolved into an exceptional leader who achieves new heights despite all the challenges that she faces every day. 

Over several decades, the IT industry has prominently reflected a male-dominated landscape. This observation finds support in a noteworthy survey conducted by Dice’s Equality Tech Report (2021) involving 9000 IT professionals that shed light on a substantial gender disparity within the tech sector. According to the report, 57% of women employed in the IT sector reported gender discrimination in their workplace. In stark contrast, merely 10% of men acknowledged having faced similar experiences.

The above statistics are quite concerning and make us realize the existence of a pronounced gender imbalance and its importance in recognizing these patterns, indicating a broader issue. It calls for a collaborative effort to raise pertinent questions about inclusivity and equal opportunities in the IT domain, address systemic challenges, and work towards creating a more balanced and supportive IT industry for everyone involved.

Motivating women in the face of this disparity, HrTech Cube recent interview with Rafaela Mazzone, Senior Product Manager at Connectly and ex-Google Global Product Lead, said, “I believe it is essential to support other women as we advance in our careers. I see this as a personal responsibility to help create a more inclusive environment for all women in the tech industry.” Rafaela further adds that she wants women to lift each other and advocate for one another to drive change and pave the way for the next generation of female tech leaders.

In recent years, we have witnessed numerous changes that have encouraged and empowered girls and women. With the emergence of support groups, networking events, and mentorship programs, we are getting equal opportunities to strive in the male-dominated tech world.

In a similar vein, Kanti Prabha, co-founder and president of SirionLabs, said that being a female co-founder in a male-dominated industry is a challenging part of the game. She further said that she reminds herself that other people’s opinions don’t affect her, as she prioritizes her work and focuses on building diversity and openness among her team members in her company. 

We need more and more women thought leaders and mentors to be vocal about their journey, everyday challenges, and struggles to prepare and inspire the next generation of women to push boundaries and make their way into the digital tech industry. 

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let us not only reflect on the past achievements of women in the tech industry but also commit to creating more equity and inclusivity in the future for all women.

By recognizing and celebrating their achievements and contributions, we can inspire the next generation of female innovators and engineers to continue pushing the stereotypical boundaries and making the “impossible possible.”
