New White Paper from Enterprise Strategy Group Outlines the Value of Composable Software-defined Infrastructure to Improve Data Center Efficiency and Environmental Impact

Combating Climate Change with Composable Disaggregated Infrastructure

In the new paper from ESG, entitled Why IT Must Prioritize Sustainability, senior analyst Scott Sinclair and senior research analyst Moya Keane discuss how adaptive, software-defined data center architectures like Liqid MatrixTM introduce enough operational performance and efficiency sufficient to offer a model for data center flexibility and more sustainable growth for organizations seeking to deploy technologies to solve data center-scale problems.

According to recent data cited by ESG:

  • The number of global data centers increased from 500,000 in 2012 to more than 8 million today1;
  • In addition, by 2025, the IT industry could use 20 percent of all electricity produced and emit up to 5.5 percent of the world’s carbon emissions2;
  • The typical data center uses about 3-5 million gallons of water per day — the same amount as a city of 30,000-50,000 people3.

Further, citing findings reported by the Wall Street Journal, ESG notes that, while a strong majority of companies understand climate change poses significant risk to their facilities and finances, only half of surveyed companies figure climate change into their current risk management4, illustrating a gap between stated acknowledgement and future preparation.

The findings place a significant responsibility on the IT community to implement data center solutions that reduce associated environmental waste, while also ensuring the ability to continue to innovate using modern, data-hungry applications that require significant infrastructure in order to perform.
