Newest certification adds additional credentials as government contractor
Furthers OpenTeams mission of pushing for governmental AI sovereignty
OpenTeams, the leader in AI models that organizations can fully own and control, today announced its compliance with Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification Level 2 (CMMC 2.0), a framework established by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to protect Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). This milestone enables OpenTeams to deepen its partnerships with U.S. federal agencies and furthers its mission to advance AI sovereignty in the public sector.
Founded by Travis Oliphant, creator of NumPy and pioneer in the open-source software movement, OpenTeams delivers custom, correct, and cost-effective AI systems that empower organizations—not vendors—to maintain full ownership of their models, data, and infrastructure. This approach aligns directly with the White House’s 2025 AI policy, which aims to maintain the United States’ global dominance in AI while prioritizing safe and secure use of AI across federal agencies, as well as greater cost-effectiveness in AI procurement and deployment.
The primary goal of CMMC is to ensure that contractors have the necessary cybersecurity measures in place to protect sensitive information from cyber threats. OpenTeams is committed to helping the US government and its allies achieve AI sovereignty and avoid the immense risk of renting expensive AI models that can’t be inspected for their logic or privacy risks.
“AI sovereignty means that governments and organizations retain full ownership over their AI, the data they’re trained on, their infrastructure, and how they evolve,” said Joe Merrill, CEO at OpenTeams. “It’s about national security, countries want to own their intelligence, not rent it.”
“The White House’s AI policies make clear that federal agencies need AI that’s trustworthy, transparent, and fully under their control,” said Ariel Kayne, Head of Government Sales at OpenTeams. “OpenTeams is one of the few providers delivering on that mandate with sovereign AI models that are auditable, secure, and built for mission-critical use. Achieving CMMC Level 2 is a meaningful milestone and demonstrates our team’s commitment to data sovereignty and security as we build our government and defense practice.”
The CMMC 2.0 Compliance is just one of the many commitments OpenTeams is making to show its dedication to expanding into the federal government such as appointing Lt. Gen (Ret) Ross Coffman to its Board of Directors, continuing its work with NASA, sponsoring the Air Force Cyberworx National Security Capital Summit and hosting invite-only events such as its SXSW National Defense AI Summit.
