URAC Launches Development of Health Care AI Accreditation

URAC, the country’s most complete health care accreditor, is taking a groundbreaking step in ensuring the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Today, URAC announced the intent to develop a new Health Care AI Accreditation, designed to provide organizations with guidance on the safe and ethical implementation of AI in health care settings, while supporting patient safety and understanding. The accreditation will serve as more than simply principles for AI, but rather as an audit that organizations can earn, reinforcing their commitment to the appropriate use of AI in health care.

URAC invites health care leaders, AI experts, policymakers and other stakeholders to offer their constructive participation in the Health Care AI Advisory Committee, where they will have the opportunity to provide input on the accreditation standards. URAC is currently collaborating with members of the CTeL Blue Ribbon Collaborative, including representatives from leading universities such as Harvard Medical School and Yale University. Other groups expressing their interest in shaping the accreditation standards though participation in the advisory committee include members of The Federation of State Medical Boards, an independent AI testing lab and technology leaders including Amazon.

“AI is already transforming health care, and organizations and patients need a trusted framework to ensure they are implementing it responsibly, safely and effectively,” said Shawn Griffin, MD, President and CEO of URAC. “As a former Chief Medical Information Officer, I understand that AI adoption is more than just a technical issue—it’s a clinical, ethical and operational challenge. URAC’s 35-year track record of being an independent accrediting body for leading organizations in telehealth and other health technologies demonstrates our ability to set rigorous, forward-thinking standards that drive real impact.”

URAC has set a target go-live date for the accreditation of the fourth quarter of 2025, ensuring that health care organizations can soon pursue the accreditation to show the commitment for responsible AI usage.

Individuals or organizations interested in joining the Advisory Committee can learn more and request to join at www.urac.org/HealthAI. Once the Committee has formed, members will explore several focus areas including risk management, monitoring and improvement consumer protection, patient encounters, clinical care and others deemed essential to develop accreditation standards. Committee registration will be open until March 14, 2025.
