AITech Interview with Anna Convery, CMO of Jumio

Anna Convery sheds light on how Jumio leverages a unique combination of AI, face-based biometrics, ML, advanced liveness detection, and automation to protect the business ecosystem.

1. Could you tell us about your role at Jumio?

As CMO, my focus includes accelerating Jumio’s growth strategy and building a highly scalable, highly optimized marketing team that delivers revenue and market value. I lead Jumio’s marketing functions across the globe, which ultimately help to drive revenue and increase market share. My background working with leading companies in cybersecurity, anti-money laundering (AML), fraud and biometrics prepared me well to step into this key role when I joined the company a year ago.

2. Which sectors does Jumio primarily target?

Jumio’s solutions are designed for any industry that is impacted by fraud, and today, that’s really any industry that has an interest in doing business online. Our customers are across sectors, including financial services, the sharing economy, healthcare, mobility, digital currency, retail, travel, online gaming and more. We work with notable brands like HSBC Bank, Paysafe, United Airlines, Rappi and many leading companies that take customers’ security seriously.

3. What pain points do your customers approach you with?

Jumio’s mission is to make the internet a safer place for both people and businesses. Today’s businesses need to know and trust that customers are who they claim to be, not fraudsters, and that builds customers’ trust in the company. This is critical for protecting a company against fraud and financial crime. Jumio’s unified, end-to-end identity verification, eKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) and AML platform helps our customers fight fraud, onboard new customers faster, and meet regulatory mandates. To date, Jumio has verified over 500 million identities issued by more than 200 countries and territories for real-time web and mobile transactions — all in the name of protecting today’s digital economy.

4. How will the KYX platform benefit your target audience?

The Jumio KYX Platform leverages a unique combination of artificial intelligence (AI),face-based biometrics, machine learning, advanced liveness detection and automation to protect the business ecosystem. We offer a range of identity-as-a-service (IDaaS) solutions that accurately establish, maintain and reassert trust from account opening to ongoing transaction monitoring. Jumio’s technology also performs critical tasks such as age verification, eKYC, user onboarding, AML screening, user authentication, proof of address, account recovery and fraud detection.

5. Can you describe a few examples of use cases for Jumio’s services?

Certainly – one example I can share is our work with customer Nationwide Building Society – the world’s largest mutual building society. We’ve been their identity verification vendor since 2018 and help them verify the identity and age of new members during a fast and convenient onboarding process.

6. What are the applications or rather opportunities you seek to have with your services?

Unlocking and leveraging the capabilities of modern AI continues to be a major opportunity for us. Jumio uses AI in three important ways: data extraction, fraud detection and risk scoring. First, Jumio uses AI to extract key data from ID documents. Jumio’s scale means we can feed our algorithms with lots of data to not only improve their ability to recognize specific ID documents but also to know how to extract the data and make sense of it. Next, AI helps us spot characteristics of fraudulent IDs, such as understanding the unique fonts, pictures and security features of a specific country-issued ID. If an ID document has been manipulated or changed and does not conform to the pattern, our AI algorithms flag it for closer review. Lastly, we leverage AI to identify patterns and the probability of fraud based on a combination of high-risk variables to alert our verification experts to pay special attention to high-risk IDs.

7. How do you perceive the contribution of AI to digital transformation?

Advancements in AI have greatly accelerated digital transformation, but the increased use of AI for identity verification can lead to inaccurate results if organizations don’t take steps to mitigate bias.

AI and machine learning models that don’t produce fair and objective data threaten the credibility and evolution of modern AI technology.
At Jumio, we strive to improve the ethical use of AI in online identity verification by prioritizing diversity & inclusion initiatives and having multiple steps in place to reduce bias

8. What is the one quote that has stayed with you throughout your professional life?

“Hope is not optimism, which expects this to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for” – Seamus Heaney
