Gigamon, the leader in cloud visibility and analytics, today announced that Joe Slowik, Principal Security Engineer of Applied Threat Research (ATR), has been named a Winner of the Top 10 Cybersecurity Experts at the 2021 Black Unicorn Awards, which take place each year during the Black Hat USA conference.
Slowik leads the threat intelligence and detection operations for Gigamon ATR. In his role, he focuses on operationalizing threat intelligence in order to understand and identify threat activity within customer networks. Slowik competed against many of the industry’s leading cybersecurity experts for this prestigious award.
“We’re pleased to name Joe Slowik of Gigamon as a Top 10 Cybersecurity Expert for 2021 among a small, elite group of information security professionals in our third annual Black Unicorn awards,” said Judges Robert R. Ackerman Jr. of AllegisCyber, David DeWalt of NightDragon, Dr. Peter Stephenson of Cyber Defense Labs and Gary Miliefsky of Cyber Defense Media Group.
Throughout his career, Slowik has touched just about every aspect of cybersecurity including roles as a threat hunter, intelligence professional, and detection engineer. From work in the US Navy, to the US Department of Energy and Los Alamos National Laboratory, to industrial control security company Dragos, and threat intelligence provider DomainTools, he draws his expertise from exposure to different facets of cyber intrusions and critical infrastructure defense.
“We’re so pleased to have Joe leading our detection and threat intel teams,” said Josh Day, Director of Gigamon ATR. “Even though Joe hasn’t been here long, he hit the ground running providing threat context and expertise on multiple major cybersecurity events. With Joe’s experience across multiple cyber disciplines and his ability to share that knowledge with the industry and his team, we are confident that Joe will continue to enhance our threat intel and detection capabilities in pursuit of our ultimate goal: to proactively protect our customers.”
In addition to his role at Gigamon, Slowik continues work with Paralus LLC, a consulting and training organization he founded in 2019, where he provides guidance for security program development and cyber threat intelligence activities in coordination with several government and multinational organizations. He routinely collaborates with his peers and shares intel with the community in places such as VirusTotal, and he regularly speaks at conferences on his own time to share his knowledge and empower the community.
